This three-hour, on-demand, self-paced course provides a solid introduction to evidence-based reading instruction (EBRI) in ABE. Learn about the four essential components of reading (alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) and how they interrelate, the role of diagnostic assessment, and the basic tenets of explicit instruction.
EBRI is an approach to teaching reading grounded in research that helps us, as adult educators, be intentional about what we teach and how we teach it—so that our reading instruction in Adult Basic Education (ABE) is both engaging and effective for adult learners.

This on-demand, self-paced course will help you understand what EBRI is and why it is important to your learners. In addition to learning about the four components of reading (alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) and how they interrelate, you will consider the importance of diagnostic assessment in informing reading instruction. In addition, the course covers key factors in successful reading instruction, including providing explicit instruction, practice opportunities, and ensuring that reading instruction is relevant and engaging. You'll have the opportunity to reflect on your own reading instruction and consider the next steps to implement EBRI strategies in your teaching practice.
MA participants who complete all course requirements will receive three LACES PD hours.
