For many, algebra can feel like a completely different subject with mysterious new symbols. It has long been a source of consternation for students (as well as for some teachers!) Helping students develop meaningful fluency in algebraic notation can help them apply their reasoning skills and can decrease “algebra anxiety,” as the symbols and grammar start to become meaningful and familiar.
Teaching Algebra Notation, written by Melissa Braaten of the SABES Math Team, is a new resource designed to demystify algebra. This three-part document reviews the meaning of notation in algebra, discusses some common student misunderstandings, and offers teaching strategies for promoting lasting student comprehension.
Part 1 explores different ways of writing operations, Part 2 focuses on parentheses and the structure of expressions, and Part 3 looks at variables and algebraic expressions.
