This engaging two-part workshop is designed to increase adult education teachers’ understanding of the needs of English learners (ELs) in the classroom and to provide practical strategies and resources to better meet these needs. Co-hosted by the SABES ESOL and ELA PD Centers.
- Teachers of adult education who would like to better address the needs of the English learners in their AE classes
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Integrating language and math skills with content instruction in the AE classroom can be a challenge at any time, but it can be particularly challenging when working with EL students who have transitioned to AE classes. This two-part workshop will increase adult education teachers’ understanding of the needs of English learners and provide practical strategies and resources to better meet these needs. The workshop will help bring awareness to the particular language and cultural needs of ELs, develop teacher knowledge of key second language acquisition principles and teaching strategies, and guide teachers in applying these principles and strategies to more effectively support the ELs in your AE classes. While this workshop will focus primarily on how to successfully engage and support non-native English speakers in the AE classroom, the strategies are adaptable and provide support for the variety of students in your classroom.
Following the face-to-face session, participants will have time to apply strategies and techniques in their classes. The group will then reconvene via a webinar, where they will have the opportunity to discuss their experiences and reflections with their colleagues.
Professional Development Points (PDPs) are available upon request to the SABES PD Center for ESOL Director, Dori McCormack (dmccormack@qcc.edu). To qualify for PDPs, participants must attend both sessions, produce a lesson plan that integrates the strategies and techniques presented in the workshop, apply these strategies and techniques in their classroom, and write and submit a one to two page report of their reflections and lessons learned.
If you have questions about the workshop, please contact Dori McCormack (dmccormack@qcc.edu).
