Overview

The CALM (Curriculum for Adults Learning Math) was designed to give adult students a strong conceptual foundation in mathematics. Teachers who have worked with CALM know that it relies heavily on tactile manipulatives, visuals, and student collaboration—so what does that look like in a time of remote learning? This webinar will sample some activities from CALM that have been adapted for remote teaching through a video conferencing app. Afterwards, there will be time to discuss as a group and brainstorm ideas for adapting the CALM materials for remote learning.

Registrants must have attended a CALM Orientation and have some experience teaching CALM.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE math teachers who have taken the CALM orientation and have some experience teaching CALM
Description

This two-and-a-half-hour virtual workshop will present adapted versions of CALM activities on the topic of positive and negative numbers. You will participate in adapted activities using both virtual manipulatives and objects from around your own home! Afterward, there will be time for a discussion and brainstorming session for CALM teachers to share ideas for adapting CALM lessons and activities for remote learning.

Due to the participatory nature of the activities and the discussion format, this support session is limited to 8 participants.

Please note: Registrants will receive a separate email from Sherry Soares from the SABES Math team at TERC with instructions on how to access the Zoom session.

    Learning Objectives
