Overview

Advising, teaching and directing in adult education right now is meaningful, important, rewarding… and hard. Recent events have only exacerbated the challenges faced by teachers, advisors, and leaders. To do our best work and sustain our efforts, we must find ways to manage the hard parts, amplify the positives, and maintain our energy. This workshop will explore specific strategies that educators can use to take care of themselves and show up for their students and colleagues.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Anyone working in adult education who would benefit from increased self-care strategies to sustain the important work of responding to adult learners at this moment in time
Description

This session builds on a three-part model of self-care that addresses specific steps educators can take to maximize positive experiences (even in challenging circumstances), manage the challenges of our work, and maintain energy for the long haul. We will address the current stresses of pandemic disruptions and steps educators can take to navigate through them.

This workshop will share research, stories and teacher-tested self-care strategies aligned to this model, and engage participants in reflection, sharing and planning.

This interactive virtual session will invite participants to create crowdsourced records of the energizing elements of our work, and the specific strategies members of our field are using right now to stay energized and balanced. It will also encourage participants to engage with personal reflection and develop individual self-care plans.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • List at least four self-care strategies and implement them
  • Identity and reflect one specific challenge in your work
  • Describe two positive elements of your current circumstances
