Civic literacy provides adult ESOL learners with a fundamental understanding of what is needed to participate in U.S democracy and what their rights and obligations are as citizens and residents. This foundation is critical to their civic engagement and civic efficacy.  Participants will be provided with ten effective strategies for introducing civic literacy into the adult ESOL classroom, as well as concrete examples, best practices, and pertinent handouts with ideas and resources.

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the key concepts of civic literacy, civic engagement, and civic efficacy
  • Explain how civic literacy and related language development contribute to adult immigrants’ societal participation
  • Adopt and adapt strategies, resources, and tools presented to incorporate civic literacy to your adult ESOL learning environment
