Explore evidence-based reading instruction (EBRI) techniques for teaching general academic (Tier 2) vocabulary to adults at the ABE and ASE levels (GLE 4-12).


    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ELA teachers and tutors of adult learners reading at the intermediate and secondary levels (GLE 4-12)
  • Subject-matter teachers (e.g., social studies, science, workforce prep, etc.)

Knowledge of academic (Tier 2) vocabulary is critical for success on the HiSET/GED and in college and careers. Explore engaging and evidence-based approaches for selecting words, designing explicit instruction, providing meaningful practice, and assessing learning. Strategies and resources appropriate for remote and in-person classes will be shared.

Complete all phases to earn 3.5 PD hours:

  1. Explore: Attend a 2-hour zoom session that introduces content and engages you in activities you can later use with students
  2. Practice: Implement one or more new instructional approaches with adult learners.
  3. Reflect and Extend: Attend a 1.5-hour zoom session to debrief and reflect on the approaches, and to extend your professional knowledge.

  • Implement key EBRI approaches for teaching Tier 2 vocabulary and assessing learning, in-person and remotely
