Overview

Participants joining this session will review the basics of immigration as they relate to adult learners, including how immigration status can impact education and employment opportunities for learners. Expert presenters from the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) will share resources that participants can use to better serve all learners at all immigration statuses.

  • Advisors, instructors, directors, and anyone looking to increase their capacity to advise, teach, and direct students with different immigration statuses
Description

In this session, presenters from MIRA will provide an overview of common immigration statuses, the privileges and restrictions associated with these statuses, and pathways to obtain legal immigration status including through family and humanitarian protections. We will address the impact of status on a learners’ ability to pursue further education and employment opportunities, the importance of working with learners regardless of their status, and share helpful resources and tools for counseling and guidance.

This session will mix presentation with interaction and a facilitated live Q&A. We will gather questions from participants in a survey ahead of time, and participants are welcome to bring case examples from their work to discuss during the Q&A portion.
