This facilitated sharing and learning group is designed to support new and experienced volunteer coordinators and others in adult education programs who work with volunteers. In this session, we will focus on how to effectively engage in challenging conversations related to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and how to help your volunteers with this process as well.
- Volunteer coordinators, both experienced and new to this work
- Adult education program staff interested in incorporating volunteers into their work
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Almost by definition, the topic of DEI is going to bring up hard conversations—whether they are between volunteer coordinators and volunteers, or between volunteers and the people they tutor. In this workshop, you will explore strategies for effective ways to have these challenging discussions, including going slowly, using active listening, showing curiosity, sharing and asking for evidence, and finding creative ways to get people out of their “corners.”
During the first interactive portion of this sharing group meeting, you will hear from Change Agent Editor Cynthia Peters from World Education’s New England Literacy Resource Center. There will be time at the end to share any difficult conversations you've had with volunteers or any experiences training them to be able to navigate difficult conversations with students.
Note: Once you register, you will receive the link to join the Zoom meeting about a week prior to the session. If you have any questions, please contact Ruzica_banovic@worlded.org.
