Overview

Christina Dennis, teacher at SCALE (Somerville) helps prepare adult learners for four of the five HiSET tests: Reading, Writing, Science, and Social Studies. She uses her background in literacy and special education to incorporate valuable language practices into all lessons, whatever the topic.

Hear from Christina about the key literacy practices she incorporates into lessons on different topics, and practice a few that you can start using in your classes.

(This session was formerly titled Language Support for ELA Adult Learners.)

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Teachers and tutors of ELA and content-area subjects (Social Studies, Science, Workforce Prep, etc.)
Description

Language development requires that learners practice listening comprehension and decoding, as demonstrated through reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students actively draw upon these language fundamentals, reinforcing their use and application time and again.

Christina incorporates strategies to support the language development of her students and builds on the strengths of all her learners, including those for whom English is not their first language. In this interactive session, Christina will touch on the connections between language comprehension and reading comprehension; the importance of word analysis; bottom-up processing; and the dimensions of word knowledge.
