Overview

Embark on a guided exploration of three resource banks for their valuable science content—Science News for Students, CK-12, and Newsela—and discuss how to match a selected reading or other resource with an appropriate formative assessment.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ELA teachers and tutors who teach about science (or who may need to do so in the future)
Description

Are you looking for well-written and trustworthy readings and resources that will present scientific concepts in clear and accessible ways for you and your adult learners?

These three resource banks are a great place to start: CK-12, Science News for Students, and Newsela. CK-12 and Science News for Students are free; Newsela has some free features; and all DESE-funded ABE programs have access to free Newsela accounts that unlock more features.

After a guided exploration of these resource banks, we will discuss how to match a selected specific reading or other resource with an appropriate formative assessment.

Please note that this session is not accessible from the SABES calendar. You will receive an email from Joanne Harrington one to two days before the session with access instructions.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Search for science resources within three resource banks: CK-12, Science News for Students, and Newsela
  • Consider formative assessments for selected resources
