How can we help students who are struggling with math? In this one-hour session, we will explore instructional strategies for helping all students access math content, particularly students with language-based learning disabilities.

Description

This session presents specific instructional strategies for supporting students who are struggling with math, particularly students with language-based learning disabilities (LBLD). Participants will learn how learning disabilities can impact math learning. They will also learn about tools and strategies that support students so that they can use their strengths. The strategies presented are immediately usable in a classroom. You will also get access to supporting materials. While these strategies are particularly helpful for supporting students with language-based learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, they have also been proven helpful for ALL students. This includes English learners and students with a variety of other learning challenges.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Understand why some students with learning disabilities, especially language-based learning disabilities, may struggle with math, as well as how to utilize student strengths to counteract these difficulties
  • Learn effective instructional strategies to help students with language-based learning disabilities and other learning challenges to better access math lessons
  • Gain comfort using a variety of graphic organizers and visual tools to help students develop understanding of mathematical concepts
