Overview

In this two-hour Zoom session, instructors focus on planning a remote ESOL lesson that effectively integrates technology into lesson objectives, assessments, and virtual learning tasks. 

    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL instructors of all language proficiency levels
  • ESOL instructors with a Zoom account and basic understanding of the Zoom platform (see prerequisites below)
Description

In this interactive workshop on Zoom, you will explore how to apply the principles of backward design to the virtual ESOL learning environment. With your colleagues, you will work on aligning learning objectives, assessments, and virtual learning tasks that integrate language development strategies, problem solving, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills, and digital literacy.  

Using a “choice board” approach, you will have the option to work independently or with level-alike colleagues to develop a virtual ESOL lesson that prompts learners to:

  • Engage with, explore, and practice the lesson content 
  • Demonstrate their learning 
  • Reflect on and assess their progress 
    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Use backward design principles for remote lesson planning
  • Select Zoom tools that support instruction and align to your ESOL lesson objective and assessments
  • Use breakout rooms and screen-share tools to increase learner engagement and provide [JY: Capitalize first word] intentional instruction in language and digital skills development, as well as interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving and other critical thinking skills
