The Curriculum for Adults Learning Math (CALM) was designed to give adult students a strong conceptual foundation in mathematics. Teachers who have worked with CALM know that it relies heavily on visuals, tactile manipulatives, and student collaboration. CALM may feel very different (to both students and teachers) from the way they learned in school when they were younger. This online workshop series is intended to help teachers deepen their understanding of the content, teaching strategies, and the overall organization of the CALM curriculum. Each support session will focus on a specific content topic. Participants will have the chance to experience CALM activities on that topic, reflect on CALM’s approach to teaching that topic, and share ideas and questions with other teachers.
While registrants are not required to attend a CALM Orientation and/or participate in the asynchronous CALM Introduction to participate in the CALM Support Series, we strongly encourage them to do so. The Support Series builds on the prior knowledge gained in the other CALM offerings. Participants will also have the opportunity to schedule one-on-one follow-up coaching sessions with the facilitator, if desired.
**This event is open to Massachusetts teachers only.**
- ABE math teachers who are using or are interested in using the CALM curriculum
- Instructors and staff from Massachusetts adult education programs
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
This 90-minute virtual workshop will look at CALM’s approach to developing conceptual understanding of quadratic expressions. You will use a virtual manipulative of an area model to multiply binomials and discover how to use algebra tiles to model and factor quadratic expressions. In addition, CALM support workshops are a time to meet and share ideas with other teachers.
Please note: Registrants will receive a separate email from Sherry Soares from the SABES Math team at TERC with instructions on how to access the Zoom session.
Did you know? CALM professional development may be bundled to receive Professional Development Points (PDPs). Learn more here.
