Overview

One of the most challenging tasks adult education teachers face is identifying texts that align with their learners’ reading abilities and also align with adult interests. In this two-part series, learn to identify appropriately complex texts for your learners and explore evidence-based practices to make complex texts accessible to all readers.

Description

Studies tell us that the texts we use with developing readers matter—not only in their development of reading proficiency but also in their motivation and engagement to learn and in their knowledge of the world around them. Moreover, studies tell us that even emerging and developing readers can read and learn from complex texts IF teachers know and use evidence-based strategies to bring such texts into their learners’ range of reading abilities. In session 1 of this two-part series, learn why using complex texts is important and how using evidence-based teaching practices helps make complex texts accessible to every reader. At the end of the first session, participants will be assigned a practicum activity to guide implementation of recommended teaching practices in their classroom settings. In session 2, participants will share their practicum experiences and observations of the effects of the teaching practices on their students. Participants will receive feedback on their practicums to help resolve challenges or obstacles to effective implementation.

Attendance at both sessions and submission of practicum activity is required to receive course credit of 4 professional development hours.
