Overview

This online facilitated session explores how teachers of adult learners can vary content, instructional processes, and assessments of learning outcomes to assure success for learners with varying backgrounds, levels, and needs. The session will provide examples for English learners at beginning through advanced levels, as well as for those learners whose first language is English. Participants will consider applications to their settings in both online and in-person classes.

Multilevel classes are a reality of just about every Adult Education and English language program and should not be considered a deterrent to students’ learning. In this session, we explore a systematic approach to differentiating instruction in both online and in-person environments to provide an optimal learning environment for everyone. You will see how to vary content, instructional processes, and products or assessments of learning outcomes to assure success for learners with varying backgrounds, levels, and needs. Examples are provided for English learners at beginning through advanced levels, as well as for those whose first language is English. Discussions will include participants’ application of this approach to their settings.

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics of a multilevel class beyond proficiency levels
  • Identify ways to differentiate the content, instructional processes, and products by design as part of the planning process
  • Apply a process of differentiating content, instructional processes, and products by design with instructional tasks from your own setting
