Overview

Come experience routines to support the language development of English learners in your math class through problem-based instruction and Mathematical Language Routines. You will make sense of problems, communicate ideas, and ask questions to clarify your understanding and revise your thinking. Routines designed to support English learners support ALL students in developing a deeper understanding of mathematics.

This session includes a different set of Mathematical Language Routines than the upcoming online workshop, Mathematical Language Routines: Supporting Student Understanding in the Math Classroom.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Teachers at all levels of math ability and comfort
Description

In this 90-minute workshop you will experience, as learners, the Mathematical Language Routines called Information Gap and Stronger and Clearer Each Time. These experiences will be the basis for teacher conversation about the language benefits and mathematical habits that students can learn during these routines as they also learn math content. You will leave with the list of eight Mathematical Language Routines you can use in your own classroom.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • This afternoon workshop follows a half-day, morning workshop called Designing Mathematical Learning for ALL: Universal Design for Learning. The morning workshop is optional and requires separate registration. Please click here for details.
  • The training site (TERC) currently requires that proof of COVID vaccination be submitted two weeks in advance to TERC's Director of Human Resources. Details about this requirement and other logistics will be emailed closer to the event date.
    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the language benefits of establishing a Mathematical Language Routine
  • Explain the mathematical habits students can develop during a Mathematical Language Routine
  • Consider a language routine to use with adult learners
