Overview

Reading Skills for Today’s Adults (RSTA) is an online collection of leveled readings. It’s a well-known resource in adult education, but what some don’t know is that a group of teachers worked collaboratively to build engaging instructional supplements to add to the existing library. Join me to explore!

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE English language arts teachers and tutors of all levels
Description

You may have heard of Reading Skills for Today’s Adults (and if you haven’t, even better!). It’s a wonderful collection of leveled readings that are written with adults in mind. That means that these stories cover topics relevant to adult life, such as “What the GED Means to Me” and “Raising a Good Reader,” among others.

During this session, we’ll look at all of the resources associated with RSTA. These resources include what’s available on their site, like activity supplements, passages, and placement information, as well as what we at CrowdED Learning have developed with adult educators, including instructor resources and an app for independent learning.

Along the way, we will explore some effective strategies for reading instruction and brainstorm how we might leverage these resources in evidence-based practice. This session will be interactive, and by sharing ideas together, everyone will come away with new tools and approaches to use in the classroom.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Locate the Reading Skills for Today’s Adult resources, including those on the website itself and those that were generated via CrowdED Learning
  • Make connections between evidence-based reading instruction and how the resources can support such instruction
  • Brainstorm ways to use, adapt, and build on the resources that are presented
  • Use the RSTA resource in the classroom to support existing best practices
