Overview

Come participate in this interactive session to develop your skills advising students with foreign degrees and credentials. Using real student scenarios, you will apply advising strategies, practice using resources, and employ new knowledge to help students navigate education and career opportunities. This session is ideal for those who have a basic understanding of the topic from experience or past professional development.The presentation also includes group work, skill-building exercises, and discussion with our presenters who have years of experience working with this population. 



**Note: While all are welcome, this session is intended for those who are familiar with the basics and are ready to share and further develop their skills and understanding of the resources in serving students with unique scenarios and needs.   • Advisors, instructors, and directors with some knowledge of students with degrees and credentials from other countries.
Description

Have you been working with students who have degrees and credentials from other countries, but you want to better serve them? Are you looking to develop your skills and understandings to incorporate a student’s past education or professional experience into their pathway? Through a hands-on activity based on real-life scenarios, you will explore and apply successful strategies for helping students navigate U.S. higher education, negotiate the challenging world of U.S. employment, and overcome barriers to securing jobs in their field. You will come away with a deepened understanding of the questions to ask, the resources available, and the referrals to make. 

We will make sure you understand the tools and resources available to support this population, including community and state resources. We will also ask you to share the tools and strategies you use.

  • Apply five guiding principles to advising students
  • List programs and resources available to complement your work and program
