Teaching Skills That Matter (TSTM) is a collection of lessons that focus on real life skills in contexts that are important in the lives of adults. These lessons can be integrated into your Curriculum for Adults Learning Math (CALM) classes to help students see the value of what they are learning and how it applies to their lives (in addition to the applications already built into CALM). Using TSTM lessons with CALM will provide your students with more math support that could benefit those who are struggling with the math or need additional information to connect the TSTM lesson to math concepts.

**This event is open to Massachusetts teachers only.**

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • All adult education math practitioners
  • HSE/ABE generalists who teach math

In this session teachers will get a brief overview of both TSTM and CALM. They will also get access to a resource that provides guidance on using TSTM to support and further contextualize math learning from CALM math classes. Teachers will participate in a CALM activity and make explicit connections to a related TSTM lesson, learning how to use the context provided in the TSTM lesson to give students an opportunity to apply their math learning while also growing in the nine “skills that matter” targeted by the TSTM lessons.

Please note: Registrants will receive a separate email from Sherry Soares from the SABES Math team at TERC (sherry_soares@terc.edu) with instructions on how to access the Zoom session.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between TSTM and CALM
  • Reason visually about ratios
  • Understand how to use TSTM lessons within CALM math classes
  • Describe how CALM can support TSTM
Presenter(s) / Facilitator(s)
