4-step statistical cycle representation

Our world is increasingly full of data, and decisions that affect our lives are made based on data. An adult education class can help students become more “data literate” so they can understand how data is collected, used, and interpreted. This understanding can allow adult learners to leverage the power of data literacy in their own decision making.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE math teachers at all levels of experience and math ability

This 90-minute virtual workshop will introduce the four stages of the statistical cycle and take you through a classroom activity for collecting data to answer a statistical question. You will look at the progression of how data topics develop and progress throughout levels. You will also have the opportunity to schedule follow-up one-on-one coaching sessions with the facilitator, if desired.

This workshop may be bundled with other CALM-related SABES math PD to earn Professional Development Points (PDPs). Review the Requesting PDPs for CALM Sequence document for more information.

Please note: Registrants will receive a separate email from Sherry Soares (sherry_soares@terc.edu) from the SABES Math team at TERC with instructions on how to access the Zoom session.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Facilitate a "Notice/Wonder" activity with a graph
  • Explain the stages in the statistical cycle and the decisions involved in statistical reasoning
  • Explain the progression of data and statistics concepts
