Have you wondered about the potential of using AI (artificial intelligence) and ChatGPT for ESOL instruction? This two-part workshop offers ESOL teachers an exploration into how AI in general and ChatGPT in particular can help spark creativity, assist in communication, and give you and your ESOL students more time to focus on the art of teaching and learning.

Please note: This course will take place in Blackboard where you will find all virtual session information, course materials, and additional resources. You cannot access the online course from the SABES website. You will receive a separate email one to two days before the course begins with instructions on how to access the Zoom session. If you do not receive these instructions, please check your Spam folder and/or send an email to nruskin@edc.org.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL teachers of students at any language proficiency level

This two-part workshop explores the innovative and transformative capabilities of ChatGPT and other curated AI tools with many exciting applications in ESOL education.

Session 1 focuses on leveraging ChatGPT for effective ESOL instruction and includes:

  • Real-world applications of ChatGPT for English learners
  • Hands-on exercises for creating and testing custom ChatGPT prompts tailored for ESOL contexts
  • Strategies for prompt engineering to optimize responses from ChatGPT
  • The challenges and opportunities that ChatGPT presents in ESOL education

Session 2 focuses on other AI tools for ESOL teaching and learning and includes:

  • An introduction to a range of AI tools and their capabilities and potential for ESOL instruction
  • An exploration of AI tools for ESOL teachers to help streamline lesson planning, classroom activity design, activity sourcing, handout creation, assessment, and more
  • A deep dive into free or low-cost AI apps and platforms for language learners that assist in providing personalized learning pathways and digital literacy and language development while also incorporating at-home use to supplement classroom learning
  • A selection of hands-on experiences and case studies that reveal the practical applications of these AI tools in the ESOL classroom
  • A discussion of the potential challenges and ethical considerations when integrating AI into ESOL education

At the conclusion of the workshop, you will complete a Next Steps document to share some ways you plan to use ChatGPT or other AI tools in your work, any issues and problems that you believe need more consideration, and any additional resources you need to move forward comfortably. We honor that while tools like ChatGPT can provide resources (akin to recipes), the ESOL teacher remains the central figure (the chef) in the educational process.
