Overview

This course is designed to help you write strong English language arts lesson plans based on the ABE learning standards used in Massachusetts. You will explore key features, work with examples, and ultimately write your own lesson plan. In addition to aligning learning standards, lesson objectives, and assessments, you will learn about choosing appropriate texts for adult learners and how to sequence and pace lesson activities.

Description

In this course, participants will examine the key features of effective lesson planning in ABE English language arts instruction. The sessions will cover aligning learning standards, lesson objectives, and assessments; choosing texts for adult learners; and sequencing and pacing different kinds of activities. As a culminating activity, you will develop a lesson plan for your own classroom and receive feedback from the facilitators.

Format:

This is a blended course consisting of two webinars and self-paced activities. All participants are expected to complete an ELA lesson plan as a culminating course activity. The course will open on October 1st and close on November 15th and is expected to take eight hours total to complete.

  • Session 1: Approximately 1 hour of independent activities in Canvas (10/1-10/14/24)
  • Session 2: Virtual workshop on Zoom (10/15/24, 2-4 p.m.) 
  • Session 3: One hour of independent work in Canvas (10/16-10/28/24)
  • Session 4: Virtual workshop on Zoom (10/29/24, 2-4 p.m.)
  • Session 5: Two hours of independent work in Canvas (10/30-11/15/24) 

Access:

The online, self-paced components of this PD series are run via Canvas. You cannot access these online components from the SABES website. You will receive a separate email from Ebony Vandross, ebony_vandross@worlded.org 1-2 days before the course begins with instructions on how to access the course in Canvas.
Zoom links for the synchronous sessions will be sent by email from the SABES ELA PD Team prior to each meeting.
MA participants who complete this course will receive 8 PD hours in LACES.
