Just as CPR training helps a layperson without medical training assist an individual experiencing a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. In both situations, the goal is to help support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Mental Health First Aid is a standardized 8-hour training course designed to teach key skills you can use to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.
Through lecture, role-play, and simulations, you will learn a 5-step strategy that includes identifying risk factors and warning signs, assessing risk, respectfully listening to and supporting the individual in crisis, and identifying appropriate professional help and other supports.
Mental Health First Aid is included on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. Participants who successfully complete the full day of training, learning activities, and final knowledge check will earn a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certificate issued by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing (NCMW) that is valid for three years and can be renewed.
Format & Requirements: This is an in-person course consisting of one live, in-person session and asynchronous pre-work. To complete the course, you will need to attend a 6-hour in-person session and complete 2 hours of asynchronous work, totaling 8 hours.
Access & Support: The course will be held in-person at the Worcester Adult Learning Center. You will receive additional information (such as directions and parking information) and information about how to access course materials in Canvas from Sovanna Carnell Guyon one week before the in-person session. - Recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.
- Apply a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional help
- Explain the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities
- Apply knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem treat and manage the problem and achieve recovery
- Assess your own views and feelings about mental health problems and disorders
