This workshop explores ways to engage Beginning and Intermediate English learners in using technology to find, evaluate, and communicate information. It is the second in the SABES Digital Literacy series and builds upon the first session's core concepts in Digital Literacy 101: Where to Begin.

Over the past two years, we all have realized how essential digital literacy and digital resilience are for full participation in education, work, and daily life. As adult educators continue to work very hard to create opportunities for equitable access by helping students acquire these critical skills, the reality in our classrooms poses some big challenges. 

Imagine a class with some students unsure of how to navigate the internet while others surf with ease; in which some are unfamiliar with using computers but are adept at using their phones, albeit only for texting, taking photos, and family video calls; in which others are clamoring for more online resources to accelerate their learning. Chances are you do not need to "imagine" such a class because this scenario is all too familiar.

This workshop is the second in the SABES Digital Literacy series and builds upon the first session's core concepts Digital Literacy 101: Where to Begin. ESOL practitioners explore five learner-centered instructional routines that promote digital literacy skill development within any lesson. Participants will experience, analyze and plan the integration of digital skill development during task-based beginning and intermediate-level instruction for both distance learning and in-person learning environments.

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Locate digital skill integration opportunities within your current practice
  • Use the World Education EdTech Integration toolkit to identify digital skills, tools and technology-rich instructional routines that match your learners' needs and devices
  • Use a series of backward design prompts to help integrate digital literacy skill instruction
