As educators in the ESOL space, we are tasked with teaching the language and literacy skills our adult multilingual learners need. In our digitally dominated world, however, effective ESOL instruction must expand to include the language and processes that will enable our learners to develop and exhibit their digital literacy and resilience. This highly interactive workshop focuses on three steps we can take to integrate the language skills that form the foundation of communication with the critical digital literacy skills that are vital to thriving in the 21st century.
During our time together you will:
1) Explore foundational digital skills that are integral to digital literacy and resilience and consider how they interrelate and transfer across various traditional adult education content areas.
2) Work with vocabulary sets related to digital skills and literacy to help learners build the fluency they need to navigate the digital world confidently.
3) Use a selection of EdTech tools to conduct some classic ESOL instructional routines and identify how these routines and tools help learners demonstrate their digital resilience.
- Differentiate between digital skills, literacy, and resilience and identify their relationship to language and literacy development
- Make use of digital resources such as the Digital Skills Glossary and Instructional Guide to help learners develop the language needed to succeed in digital academic, workplace, and community environments
- Use a variety of instructional routines to support ESOL learners’ acquisition of the language and processes associated with digital literacy and digital resilience
