Every day, adults navigate a sonic landscape filled with English in a variety of forms, from casual conversations to formal presentations—both recorded and live. This workshop demonstrates ways to foster learners' focused and active listening skills in that landscape using both synchronous and asynchronous listening opportunities along with authentic recorded workforce and educational content on the Web.
Please note: This course will take place in Blackboard where you will find all virtual session information, course materials, and additional resources. You cannot access the online course from the SABES website. You will receive a separate email one to two days before the course begins with instructions on how to access the Zoom session. If you do not receive these instructions, please check your Spam folder and/or send an email to nruskin@edc.org.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:
In today’s world, digital literacy and traditional literacy are inextricably woven together, creating a complex tapestry of communication. For the multilingual learner, being digitally fluent is a necessity on par with mastering English language skills. This workshop focuses on fusing instruction in listening strategies, digital skills, and digital literacy in the ESOL classroom.
The interactive session introduces edtech routines that use authentic recorded workforce and educational content on the Web to foster learners' focused listening skills. Throughout the workshop, we will demonstrate ways that video platforms can build active listening skills. You will explore how the effective use of audio and video tools can help learners practice listening strategies to increase comprehension of spoken English, such as seeking clarification, listening with a purpose, and re-listening.
We will also model ways to use learners’ autonomous listening practice as a path to building foundational digital skills.
As a “proof of learning” task, you will create a listening task using authentic audio content from the Web.
This session is the first in the Fusing Literacy series. Please visit the SABES Calendar (https://sabes.org/calendar) for more information and to register for these other sessions:
