This is the fourth video in the series Creating Robust ELA Unit Plans Using the SABES Template. SABES recommends that you view the videos in numerical order to see how Lauren's conceptualization of the unit evolved over time. Earlier videos provide needed context for later videos.

In VIDEO 4, you will learn how Lauren Twardy, an ABE teacher with Middlesex Community College, approached the task of aligning the priority ELA standards, the unit objectives, and assessments while completing the SABES ELA Unit Plan template.

Lauren discusses the following in the video:

  1. SABES supports that were helpful in aligning the standards, unit objectives, and assessments;
  2. How she used the Aligning ELA Standards, Unit Objectives, and Assessments tool, a.k.a. the "SOA Chart"; and
  3. Tips she has for other teachers/programs based on her own work.

Guiding Questions: As you watch the video, think about how you would respond to these questions from the SABES REVIEW GUIDE: ELA Unit Plan.

  • Are the unit objectives and assessments mentioned in PART 2 of the unit plan template clearly connected/aligned to the priority ELA standards and culminating assessment mentioned in PART 1? (See alignment chart.)
  • Is it clear that the focus of the objectives and the assessments is primarily on ELA skills, not (just) content knowledge?
  • Are there a variety of formative and summative assessments included, with expectations for performance clearly communicated to students (e.g., through rubrics, checklists)?
