Dr. Gholnecsar Muhammad's research examines the historical roots of culturally responsive education (CRE) and provides a clear, practical, and equitable model that extends original CRE research into a new model of culturally and historically responsive education (CHRE).
She has applied her five-layered equity model for teaching and learning (identity, skills, intellectualism, criticality, and joy) to curriculum units originally developed by the SABES Curriculum & Instruction PD Centers to create exemplars of equitable, inclusive, and engaging adult education lessons. These exemplars are below. Dr. Muhammad has also shared:
- Google Drive folder of various other CHRE resources she has compiled here
- PDF of the CHRE suggestions for the SABES curricula samples, along with several original suggestions she has created on various topics, which can be downloaded here
CHRE-Enhanced SABES Lessons for ELA, ESOL, and Math
For each exemplar below, there are two links: one for the original SABES-created lesson/unit plan, and one with supplemental ideas for incorporating CHRE principles from Dr. Muhammad.
