Vocabulary involves knowing what words mean. When we talk of learners’ “vocabulary,” we’re thinking of the number of words whose meanings they know and can apply. We call this a person’s breadth of vocabulary. We also consider a person's depth of understanding of those words. Do learners know the range of multiple meanings for a word, or can they only use a word in one specific context?
