Some say, “Math is just another language,” while others say, “Math is not like language at all.” Regardless of where you stand, comprehending and using math concepts does require an understanding of language. This article, which appeared in the Summer 2016 issue of The Math Practitioner, discusses some common language features that can trip up English language learners and strategies for clarifying 'math talk' for all students.
