Are you a program director, instructional leader, or teacher who needs to develop or revise your English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for the upcoming school year? The SABES English Language Arts PD team has a robust library of resources that can support your staff with creating high-quality curriculum.
The following resources have been updated and can be found on the SABES Website:
- Scope & Sequence
- Unit Planning
In addition to these updated resources, the SABES ELA team recently released a video series, Creating Robust ELA Unit Plans Using the SABES Template. This series features Lauren Twardy, an ABE teacher with Middlesex Community College, and highlights her experiences using the SABES ELA Unit Plan template to revise an ELA unit on immigration.
The following are some suggestions on how you and your team can use these resources during the curriculum development or revision process:
- Select the appropriate ELA Design Task & Resources tool for your curriculum project (Scope & Sequence or Unit Plan). Complete the numbered tasks in order, chunk and space out the tasks, work with a partner/team, and revisit/revise previous sections as you move through the process.
- Watch the Creating Robust Unit Plans Video Series to learn how Lauren Twardy used the templates and tools, including the ELA Design Tasks and Resources for ELA Unit Planning, to structure her unit plan revision work. Debrief/discuss the application of the tools if working with a team.
- Review Lauren Twardy’s revised unit plan and other curriculum examples on the SABES website for inspiration or to adapt for use in your program.
- Use the recommended ELA Scope & Sequence and/or Unit Plan Templates to draft your curriculum. The templates include directions and links to helpful resources. A lesson plan template is also available.
- With your team, review newly drafted or existing curriculum using the ELA Scope & Sequence and/or Unit Plan Review Guides to identify strengths and weaknesses.
Please contact the SABES ELA center to request a curriculum coach for additional support using these resources.
