The SABES ELA and Communication teams are pleased to announce the release of a new ELA instructional video filmed in partnership with Blue Hills Adult Education Program. In the video, instructor Stephanie Gaboury teaches her intermediate-level ABE students an evidence-based reading comprehension strategy to help them summarize a text by finding the topic and main idea of each paragraph. Ms. Gaboury uses explicit instruction to first explain and model the strategy for her students, and then engages them in guided practice and independent application. Toward the end of the video, Ms. Gaboury reflects on the lesson, including why she chose the reading selection.
Accompanying resources include Ms. Gaboury’s Lesson Plan, as well as Discussion Questions that can be used for staff development activities with teaching teams or for individual reflection.
- Teachers can watch the video to learn an evidence-based reading comprehension strategy to try with their students and use the accompanying lesson plan as a foundation for planning. The video could even be integrated into instruction as an introduction to the strategy!
- Instructional leads can plan staff development activities using the video and accompanying Discussion Questions. The questions include activities tied to the ABE Professional Standards / ELA Proficiency Guide, and touch on topics including EBRI and explicit instruction.
Visit the SABES website to watch the video and explore the related resources.
Thank you to the staff and adult learners from the Blue Hills Adult Education program for allowing us to film their class!
