This packet introduces an instructional routine called a Test Talk. Test Talks will help you create and nurture a classroom culture that values flexible thinking and conceptual understanding and that explicitly prepares students to apply their learning in the context of standardized tests. The bulk of this packet is examples of test-like questions that can be used with this routine.
Test Talks are intended to:
- Help students apply and extend their learning in the context of standardized test questions
- Solidify learning and act as a formative assessment
- Empower students to think flexibly and creatively in test situations
- Build students’ capacity to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them (Standard for Mathematical Practice #1 in the CCRSAE)
The test-like questions in this packet can also be found in the ongoing blog series Will This Be on the Test? found at https://www.terc.edu/adultnumeracycenter/blog/.
