In this two-hour Zoom session, participants learn how to transfer effective in-person writing instruction to the virtual classroom. This session will focus on the writing process, in particular the pre-writing tasks of schema building, planning and organizing ideas, as well as peer editing tasks and publishing options.
Please note: You will access Zoom and other support materials via Blackboard. You cannot access the online course from the SABES website. You will receive a separate email from Joanne Harrington at Quinsigamond Community College 1-2 days before the course begins with instructions on how to access the Blackboard course and the Zoom session.

Teaching writing in the virtual ESOL classroom has a unique set of challenges including helping learners use their phones to plan, type drafts, get feedback, and edit their work. In this session, teachers explore how the stages of the writing process can be remotely addressed remotely using a variety of creative work-arounds and a few old-school approaches (pencil and paper anyone?). The presenter will guide teachers through the stages of a writing process lesson and highlight the benefits of teaching writing online.
- Employ one or more multi-level pre-writing tasks in the virtual ESOL classroom
- Use annotation features to help learners recognize text structure in a model text
- Use Zoom and smartphone features to help learners generate, get feedback and edit their written work
