Motivational interviewing (MI) is a form of empathic dialogue for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change that can be used in adult education advising and coaching. It is designed to strengthen an individual’s motivation to meet their goals by eliciting and exploring reasons for change and unpacking the resistance that arises in the process. This four-part interactive offering gives participants an opportunity to learn the central concepts of MI and practice MI skills.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Basic Motivational Interviewing training contains four modules that are delivered over a period of 16 course hours and combine instructional hours and “on-task” remote learning hours. The series calls for a blend of theoretical discussion on the design and purpose of MI and in-class practice of the method. Although instructional styles vary, the training outcomes are standardized.
After the training, participants will have an understanding of the elements of Motivational Interviewing and its applications to adult education and workforce development. Teachers and advisors will understand how they can use this technique to enhance student motivation in the classroom and advising sessions. Administrators will understand how the method can be used for different aspects of programming, for example, intake/admissions, reporting, and evaluation.
The training is participatory and the participants can expect to be engaged into discussion and practice scenarios for the most of the session time. We will use a blend of large group discussion, role play, and brief lecture methodologies.
Total time is 16 hours: 12 hours of group synchronous learning and 4 hours of independent reading/reflecting. Please note that attendance at all four sessions, as well as independent work, is required for completion.
