Promoting learners’ language development means providing multiple opportunities for them to try out new language in both guided and free practice, with classmates and on their own. This session examines the Gradual Release of Responsibility model that helps us move from teacher-centered to teacher-directed to learner-directed instruction.

Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) is a useful practice for ESOL instruction that aligns to the MAELPS framework and promotes the central skills from the Teaching Skills that Matter project. Participants in this virtual webshop explore the I do-We do-You all do-You do stages of learning and instruction that move back and forth between elements of the lesson that need teacher direction and scaffolding and those elements in which learners can be more autonomous. Session tasks include analyzing textbook materials to identify the GRR stages. Participants also collaborate on designing a speaking/listening lesson that gradually releases the teacher’s responsibility for student learning and increases learners’ investment and engagement in their language development.
