Promoting learners’ language development means providing multiple opportunities for meaningful practice that, ideally, expands learners' use of the new language while encouraging collaboration and learner autonomy. The Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model is an effective way to approach instructional planning that cycles between teacher-directed instruction and learner-directed practice.

Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) is a useful practice for ESOL instruction that aligns to the MAELPS framework and promotes the central skills from the Teaching Skills that Matter project. Participants in this virtual workshop explore the I do-We do-You all do-You do phases of learning and instruction that cycle between teacher instruction, demonstration and modeling, learners working with the teacher, and learners working autonomously. The session models the GRR approach with activities that include:
- An explanation of the rationale for incorporating GRR in your ESOL classes
- Participants and presenter identifying learning tasks that correlate to different GRR phases
- Small groups analyzing textbook materials for areas in which GRR would enhance the lesson
- Participants collaborating on outlining a speaking/listening lesson that gradually releases the teacher’s responsibility for student learning and increases learners’ investment and engagement in their language development
- Identify the rationale for incorporating a Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) into your ESOL classes
- Apply the phases of GRR in your instructional practice and materials
- Incorporate GRR into your instructional planning
