Overview

Learn how to assess a student's writing abilities to inform instruction and how to help students revise their writing in a productive, skills-based manner. This session will be led by the associate director of the Landmark School Outreach Program.

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE English Language Arts instructors of all levels
  • ABE teachers and tutors of students with a variety of learning challenges
Description

This 90-minute session will first cover pre-instruction ways to diagnostically assess student writing ability as a means of informing relevant instruction. We will include ideas for possible diagnostic assessments, as well as an objective manner to evaluate students' diagnostic writing.

We will then shift to a discussion of meaningful revision tasks based in structured checklists that improve student writing while also practicing skill instruction. The creation of useful grading rubrics for writing will also be covered.
