Overview

Join us for a rich discussion about the many ways that Massachusetts programs and students are collaborating to create and grow student leadership opportunities. In this workshop, student leaders and program staff will share their experiences with student leadership, including models they’re using; what’s working for them; what challenges they’ve encountered; and their plans for the future. There will also be time for participants to work on planning together with their own colleagues or across programs.  

    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • New and experienced adult educators who want to unlock the potential of student leadership in their programs
  • Educators who want to improve program enrollment and student persistence
  • Program teams that want to create an inclusive process that values students as key partners
Description

Research shows that centering student voice in the life of a program increases student persistence by fostering student engagement, cultivating a sense of community, and building student ownership of their own learning. Student leadership also promotes the “liberation” concepts shared in our UPD ADEI work: power-sharing, community, understanding, belonging, self-determination, and trust. 

In this virtual workshop, panelists will share what student leadership looks like in their program, along with some of the challenges and benefits they’ve encountered in developing and implementing a student leadership initiative. 

In addition to the panel discussion, you will have time to consider what implementation could look like in your own program, and to co-plan with colleagues from your own program or another. We encourage you to bring and share your ideas, questions, experiences, and challenges related to student leadership.

This session is a follow-up to our December 7, 2023 panel discussion with student leaders. If you missed this excellent session, catch up on the many ideas and experiences presented by watching a video recording of the event.

Although not required, we encourage programs to attend in teams with the director, teachers, advisors, volunteers, student leaders, and others who might engage in this effort.

Following the workshop, Program Support PD Director Alexandra Papagno will be available to meet individually with programs to brainstorm ideas for how to move forward or troubleshoot ongoing work.
