Overview

Build your skills to develop disability-inclusive practices within your adult education program. The facilitator will draw from disability studies, disability activism, and the practical knowledge of workforce development to provide discussion and constructive guidance for adult educators who wish to build or enhance disability inclusive practices in their programs.

Description

This workshop combines practical tools and strategies with foundational ideas in disability studies to support more disability-inclusive programming. We will begin with an overview of the new and improved Basic Disability Screening Tool, which provides practical guidance to help you and students determine if there is a need for professional assessments. Next, we will discuss referral processes and funding sources for additional assessments. Then, we will learn about the Common Accommodations for Learning tool. All tools referenced are collected in the Basic Disability Screening for Adult Educators (BDSAE).

We will also discuss how adult education programs can benefit from the important work being done in disability studies, disability activism, and disability inclusion in workforce development contexts. You will be supported in developing disability-conscious activities and products for use in program orientations, classrooms and program administration. Activities and products in your plan will be developed to: 

  • Create disability-inclusive organizational culture
  • Infuse universal design for learning in the instruction
  • Provide access to accommodations for all learner

Course Format: This session is a two-hour online webinar.
