Teaching Algebra Notation, written by Melissa Braaten of the SABES Math Team, is a new resource designed to demystify algebra. This three-part document reviews the meaning of notation in algebra, discusses some common student misunderstandings, and offers teaching strategies for promoting lasting student comprehension.
Part 1 explores different ways of writing operations, Part 2 focuses on parentheses and the structure of expressions, and Part 3 looks at variables and algebraic expressions.
Additional support for teaching algebra is also available by contacting the SABES Math Team at adultnumeracy@terc.edu.
