Overview of Evidence-Based Reading Instruction (On-Demand)
This three-hour, on-demand, self-paced course provides a solid introduction to evidence-based reading instruction (EBRI) in ABE. Learn about the four essential components of reading (alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) and how they interrelate, the role of diagnostic assessment, and the basic tenets of explicit instruction. EBRI is an approach to teaching reading grounded in research that helps us, as adult educators, be intentional about what we teach and how we teach it—so that our reading instruction in Adult Basic Education (ABE) is both engaging and effective for adult learners.
The course is available on demand, and you may complete it anytime through May 28, 2027.

This three-hour, self-paced online course provides a guided exploration of the key components of effective ELA curriculum in MA adult education programs, and of the curriculum building tools and resources available to you through the SABES ELA Curriculum & Instruction PD Team.

Many adult learners have had traumatic experiences that impact their ability to learn. Escaping a war-torn country, surviving abuse, living in poverty, dealing with the daily circumstances of systemic racism, and living through the COVID-19 pandemic are just some examples. This two-hour online workshop, hosted by the ELA, Math, and ESOL C&I PD teams, focuses on the effects of trauma on the brain, the impact of trauma on learning, and why an understanding of trauma matters to adult educators. We will also discuss how to notice when a student is experiencing any kind of trauma while teaching remotely and ways to deal with this as a teacher during remote instruction.
