In this video, you will see a demonstration of the instructional routine “Fraction Talks” and hear from the teacher and two students about their experience using it. The students share their conceptions of fractions and work toward the conclusion that when comparing the space occupied by fractions of different sizes, the fraction pieces must be the same size.
This video highlights Fraction Talks as an instructional routine that gets students thinking deeply about fractions and provides insight into student thinking. Specifically, it illustrates how the students benefit from working with their peers and how the teacher learns about the students’ understandings from their sharing of their ideas.
The SABES Math and Adult Numeracy Team appreciates the students’ and the teacher’s willingness to allow us to film their class and to share their classroom learning experience with other practitioners in hopes of sharing the value of Fractions Talks as an instructional routine.
