English Learners in the ABE Math Classroom (Self-Paced Modules)

Most adult education programs have English learners (ELs) in their adult basic education (ABE) courses. These ELs, like their native English-speaking classmates, are often working toward their HiSET or other education and career goals. This online course is designed help adult education instructors teach math to ELs more effectively and in a culturally respectful manner. The strategies and ideas presented in this course are also appropriate for adult ESOL instructors as well as ABE instructors who only have native English speakers in their classes.

CALM Introduction (Self-Paced)

This course introduces you to the logistical elements of Curriculum for Adults Learning Math (CALM) and its guiding principles. CALM teaches conceptual understanding of skills from College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE) levels B–E (GLE 3-12) and contains thorough unit plans, lesson plans, and supporting materials. CALM is different from traditional curricula! Thus, it is important to understand its structure and philosophy to be able to use it effectively. Teachers who already use CALM can benefit from this course as a refresher. This event is open to Massachusetts teachers only.

Math Foundations Academy (Blended, Waltham)

The Math Foundations Academy is designed to engage instructors in inquiry and reflective learning to expand the effective math and numeracy instructional approaches they currently use or are interested in adding to their teaching toolbox. The Math Academy will include two institutes, each composed of an in-person session, synchronous and asynchronous events, coaching, and a community of practice (CoP).
